Book Description

ANDY FANSHAWE was born in Cheshire in 1963. He started climbing on the British crags whilst at Wilmslow Grammar School, and led his first expedition, to the Ecuadorian Andes, whilst a geology student at Imperial College, London. Then, in a bold Himalayan debut in 1986, he led an expedition to make the first ever traverse of the twin summits of Chogolisa. This magnificent climb, accomplished with characteristic panache, in committing alpine-style, was recorded in his book Coming Through, along with his subsequent first ascent of Menlungtse West. Both routes are included in this book. Amongst this many fine alpine climbs, the most memorable were winter ascents of the Croz Spur and the Eiger North Face. Tragically, he died shortly before his twenty-ninth birthday in a fall on Lochnagar, Scotland. Andy's enthusiasm and enormous zest for life and climbing were an inspiration to all who met him, as Nations Officer of the British Mountaineering Council, as writer and lecturer. He worked on the early stages of this book with excitement and dedication. Stephen Venables took over the project in 1992.

STEPHEN VENABLES (born 1954) is one of Britain's best known mountaineers. During a career spanning twenty-five years he has skied and climbed throughout the European Alps. Further afield, he has ranged from the rock climbs of southern Africa to first ascents on the Antarctic island of South Georgia and new routes in the Andes. However his greatest enthusiasm is for the Himalayan. In the course of the thirteen expeditions to Asian he has visited many previously unexplored valleys and attempted numerous first ascents. There have been some tantalizing near misses, such as Kunyang Kish and Rimo, both described in this book; successes include Panch Chuli V, Solu Tower and the beautiful summit of Kishtwar-Shivling, another climb selected here. He has concentrated mainly on smaller, lesser known Himalayan peaks, but in 1988 he joined an international expedition to climb a spectacular new route on the huge East Face of Everest. The four-man team was the smallest ever to pioneer a major new route on the world's highest mountain and Vanables was the first Briton to reach the summit without...../. That epic limb was described in his highly acclaimed Everest Kangshung Face. His earlier first book Painted Mountains, an account of two expeditions to Kashmir, won the 1986 Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature. He has written two other books and contributed numerous articles and photographs to most of the international mountain magazines, as well as writing for the Daily Telegraph. He is married with two sons.
